November 4 / 50 Cent Bin
Back before I started 'updating regularly' again, I wrote a big piece on obscure Canadian 70's rockers Klaatu (There was a persistent rumor that they were the Beatles re-formed). You can read it here. Jamie Vernon, the man responsible for the recent spate of Klaatu CD reissues posted the following on a Klaatu-centric mailing list the other day:
"Klaatu's John Woloschuk just called me to ask if I could track down a rap song for him called "Lay You Down". Apparently, a sample of Klaatu's 1974 song "Dr. Marvello" is used in it, and John's starting to see royalty cheques from sales. Because Klaatu has no control over their master recordings outside of Canada, John's curious to find out the context of the sample under which Capitol in the US agreed to license it."
"Turns out....the song is 50 (fiddy) Cent and his posse G-Unit from their 2003 Interscope album "Beg For Mercy". The "clean" version is called 'Lay You Down'....the "dirty" version is called "Lay Ya Ass Down."
"Also, their song "A Million Miles Away" has also been covered recently....a rather luxurious royalty cheque has popped up for that one out of the US. Can't seem to find a source of who recorded it though. Anyone?"
I've included MP3 samples of both below. They didn't even bother to isolate the parts without singing - The Klaatu vocals are audible beneath the raps!

Since Kanye West produced several hits where he left the vocals of the original song he sampled playing through the whole track, I'm sure rap producers don't feel the need to isolate the instrumental parts anymore. Look at it as artistic license. Not that this G-Unit song is artistic. |

I'm feeling both versions of this song. I'm a big rap fan and I love G-Unit. I was looking through the CD insert on "Beg for Mercy" and saw "elements from Dr.Marvello. "Lay Your Ass Down" was my jam on that album. So much that I went and googled this "Dr Marvello" song . I found a download of the song from this blog right here, and now there's one more person that heard the original. Whether you like rap or not, you can appreciate the fact that people got a chance to listen to the original. I think whoever produced "lay you down"(it says Khali for sol Music Works) did a good job at adapting it into a hip hop track |

'Doctor Marvello' is a terrific tune. The lyrics on that rap version are horrendous, it has a good arrangement though. Somehow it's good to see rap fans discovering Klaatu so they can see how real music sounds like. |

Here's another great example of how little creativity there is in rap music. Staying with that gangster attitude if I can use I'll steal it. It's great that Klaatu's music is being exposed to a wider audienice. All the music used is Klaatu, that beat I believe they're talking about is that great bass line brought way up front. I just hope they got the financial credit too. |
