1999-2003

Feb 2001 - Mar 2003
Oct 2000 - Nov 2000
May 1999 - Oct 2000

This is the new "Stripped down," "Easier to Update" version of kempa.com. My theory is that if it's less of a pain in the ass to update this site, I'll do it more. Unfortunately, putting together a site that is less of an ass-pain to update requires roughly twice as much commitment as just actually updating the old site, so it took forever.

Not to worry - the old site is still available in it's entirety. I put much less thought into the new design than I did the old one, but the old one resizes your browser window, and people never did seem to get over that. Anyway - it was all frames-core and every time I updated it I had to change code in a million different places. I recently took the time sit down and install movable type, and now it does at all by itself.

Other Sites I'm Involved With:

The 'Old' Kempa.com
www.kempa.com/oldindex.html

I used this design from January 2001 through January 2004. I made about 50 entries that are still embedded over there. Some are actually pretty worthwhile, if I do say so myself.

Kempa.com Holiday Mix 2003
www.kempa.com/xmas03.html

Since I hadn't updated this site since March, I decided to put my webspace to good use in December and share a christmas mix. For my own convenience, I've decided to leave it up year-round.

The Barnes & Noble Experience
www.bnexperience.com

I worked at Barnes & Noble as a bookseller for four years. During that time I encountered the absolute worst of humanity, and I wrote about it. Four years later, Gawker linked to it, generating something like 5000 hits in one day. A few days later a site which I had never heard of called collegehumor.com linked to it, generating something ridiculous like 10,000 hits in one day. So apparently collegehumor.com is hot shit. I digress. These are stories about funny experiences. The earlier ones make me cringe.

Zumpano Rarities
www.behindthebeehive.com

Carl Newman, currently the leader of indie darlings the New Pornographers, cut his teeth in a band called Zumpano. They released two albums for Subpop before breaking up. This is a site I put together collecting mp3's of B-sides, a poorly-taped live show from 1997, some photos and an article or two in .pdf format. Calling all nerds.

The Pop Project
www.popproject.com

I play the drums in the pop project. Download MP3's and snicker at each member's top five songs of the moment. Alternately: Snicker at MP3's and download each member's top five songs of the moment.

The Recital
www.therecital.com

Yep, still a band.

The Paincakes
www.paincakes.com

I have no idea who these dudes are, but they obviously have great senses of humor.

Wurlitzer Guitars
www.wurlitzerguitars.com

In 2001 I was given a Wurlitzer stereo guitar. At the time, there was literally NO information on the brand available on the internet, so I spent much of 2003 (very) passively researching Wurlitzer Guitars. I put this skeletal site up to share the resources that others shared with me - original catalogs, company histories, schematics, etc.

Chris Kempa
www.chriskempa.com

This website was put up to memorialize my late younger brother Chris in early 2001. 6/10/84 - 11/20/00.

Suburban Sprawl Music
www.suburbansprawlmusic.com

Suburban Sprawl Music: "A label, sometimes." All sorts of MP3 downloads available here.  Updated!
